Wizard of Oz
Based on the book by L. Frank Baum, Music and Lyrics by Harold Arlen and E. Y. Harburg

CONCEPT

Wizard of Oz is a classic fairytale musical from American history. It is the lovely coming-of-age story of Dorothy Gale. At its heart, this is an adventure about a young girl who broadens her views of the world through a series of challenges and by relating to the power of the mind, heart, and personal acceptance.  Through Dorothy’s eyes, the world should begin simply, open up and become incredibly complicated, then return to the simplicity of the beginning but with a newfound perspective. I would like us to focus Dorothy’s journey in this way: to become a powerful, smart, confident woman, one must embrace their own sense of self to better battle the conformities of a materialistic world.

SET DESIGN

The beauty and the challenge of this show is that the world of Oz must feel like it doesn't follow the rules of our world. Up needs to be down, and right needs to be sandwich...but the key is that it is really a dream of Dorothy's, so the goal is to still base it in Dorothy's own life. So, we took overhead views of Kansas landscape and used that to create the floor. We created portals and floating clouds and a sense of the ordinary world exaggerated.
