Treasure Island
Adapted by the cast from the Robert Louis Stevenson novel

CONCEPT

Much of our pirate popular culture is drawn directly from Robert Lewis Stevenson’s classic tale. Truthfully, Stevenson had very little knowledge of actually piracy. It is because of him that our typical pirate has a peg leg, carries a parrot, and says things like, “yo ho.” While pirate historians may find his word to be inaccurate, we thank our patron saint Stevenson for giving us the inspiration for the work of Errol Flynn  as well as  Pirates of the Caribbean. My goal with this production was to play with the twists and turns of Stevenson's heroes and villains and fill them with text and context that question who Jim Hawkins and his fellows heroes are; conversely, love to hate our anti-hero, Long John...scoundrel, friend...hero.

SET DESIGN

The most difficult and exciting goal of this productions was to create varied spaces, from the Benbow Inn to the Hispaniola. So, we created a stationary platform with a huge mast running from the floor to the top of the proscenium,  and the world shifted around the platform, with stairs being added and removed, and the set pieces filling in the specific elements of the location. As we moved to the island, we covered the set with moss and floral items to transform the wooden set pieces. This production was honored by being chosen to be performed at the Illinois High School Theatre Festival.
