Phantom of the Opera
Book Andrew Lloyd Webber and Richard Stilgoe

CONCEPT

The Phantom is described as a composer, architect, as well as an inventor. He is an intriguing and mysterious creature, beautiful in his own way, yet shunned for his outward appearance. He is not a man who hides for fear of being ridiculed; he is a man who seeks the shadows to cultivate his genius. Surrounded by a world of fools, the Phantom offers Christine an escape. The choice that Christine must make is a difficult one. Does she love the Phantom? Does she love Raoul? Is she swept up by Phantom’s dangerous, magical illusions, or does she choose a life of comfort and security with Raoul. Raoul is a long beloved friend who can give Christine what she has always hoped for in life. Yet, the Phantom can give her things that she never even imagined in her wildest fantasies.

SET DESIGN

The world of The Phantom of the Opera exists in the slippery time between the Classical and the Romantic Periods in music. The artists of this time emphasized order and the ideals of classical antiquity. Phantom is a Romantic, passionately expressing himself in the world of a formalized hierarchy. The steampunk half mask to the left was the central image I gave the designers. The Phantom was a man of bold gestures, grand designs, and a dark elegance. Our challenge was to produce the Paris Opera House, and its bowels on a dime. So, we chose sculptural pieces that harkened to the architecture of opera houses, as well as embracing shadow and the magic of audience's suspension of disbelief to create these spaces.
