Phantom of the Opera

SET DESIGN
The world of The Phantom of the Opera exists in the slippery time between the Classical and the Romantic Periods in music. The artists of this time emphasized order and the ideals of classical antiquity. Phantom is a Romantic, passionately expressing himself in the world of a formalized hierarchy. The steampunk half mask to the left was the central image I gave the designers. The Phantom was a man of bold gestures, grand designs, and a dark elegance. Our challenge was to produce the Paris Opera House, and its bowels on a dime. So, we chose sculptural pieces that harkened to the architecture of opera houses, as well as embracing shadow and the magic of audience's suspension of disbelief to create these spaces. |
