A Midsummer Night's Dream
By William Shakespeare

CONCEPT

At its heart, Midsummer is three stories in one, each giving a comment on love. For Hermia and Lysander, love is a journey, a battle to prove love’s power over anything else. For Oberon and Titania, it shows how selfish and difficult love can be at times. For the rude mechanicals, the fools of this play, their love of storytelling elevates them to be able ot perform for the Duke! When we are young, we throw ourselves at love, like Hermia, Helena, Lysander, and Demetrius. As we get older, we realize that to have love and a good relationship, it takes struggle, sacrifice, and commitment. There is no magical flower that can make people devote themselves to us; and, as you will see, it is not something that we would want, anyway. This show is not an academic exercise, though, it is a comedy.

SET DESIGN

Midsummer takes place in two separate worlds: Greece and the Forest of Arden. These two places should feel different. At the top of the show, Greece should feel like a prison for Hermia and the forest a pass to freedom. In Greece, we hear sounds of progress, industry, mechanisms, and in the forest we hear interpretations of nature through instrumental music. It is mix between urban, metropolitan, and natural that we need sound to help create. We focused on geometric shapes that were then reshaped by fabric and floral designs to create the forest. Our goal was color, wonder, and a transformation between the structure of Athens and the chaos of Arden.
