Man of La Mancha
Book by Dale Wasserman, Music by Mitch Leigh, Lyrics by Joe Darion

CONCEPT

“Facts are the enemy of truth.” Don Miguel de Cervantes says this to another character and I can think of no other quote to encapsulate this musical. I approached this production as a conversation between imagination and insanity. Octavio Ocampo's "Visiones del Quijote," served as a motivating image for the designers and actors. Exploring the depths of the man imprisoned, Cervantes, compared to the man who is free from all but age and infirmity, Quixote, is captured brilliantly by Ocampo. It led us to creating many illusions within the set, like a wall of stone that, when lit correctly, showed the face of Quixote.

SET DESIGN

Don Quixote was a man “dubbed” insane because he believed that he saw monsters where there were windmills, knights inside of common men, and a lady inside of a woman who couldn’t even see it within herself. In Man of La Mancha, each character plays multiple roles. This “putting on” and “taking off” of roles is significant. In our own lives, we play multiple roles…but which role truly defines who we are as individuals and as a culture of people? The set then became this cavelike structure that could be transformed through lighting and performers using set pieces that fit together.
