Jesus Christ Superstar
Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Lyrics by Tim Rice

CONCEPT

If you do this show, then you know that you are basically given lyrics with virtually no context whatsoever. That is both exciting and terrifying. We decided to place the show in a revival tent-like structure influenced by the rock opera roots of the show, as well as focusing the production in a very clear locale for the audience. We then pulled from Biblical references to each day to tie the story together. Framing the story on Jesus' relationship with Judas, we played with the audience's expectations by staging moments, like Judas' cathartic song as a desperate tug of war that ended with his decision as to how he should enact his own sense of personal justice.

SET DESIGN

The image to the left spoke to the wonder and fervor that Jesus created, as well as the possibilities of this set. We played with the connections between Biblical storytelling, circus-like activities, and rock opera conventions. We placed the orchestra onstage, and we interacted with the audience to bring them into the story. The theatricality of the revival tent that we ended with was so much fun to play with, and our projections gave the whole space an otherworldly feel.
